River near Saigon in the first half of the 19th century

The painting depicts a panorama sight, seen from a high viewpoint, and shows us the river near Saigon in the first half of the 19th century. This great meandering yellow river, part of the Mekong-delta was described as navigable by ships of the largest size connecting the city of Saigon with the sea over sixty miles through a dense forest. I created this painting with great passion in a time span of seven years and it took more than 4000 hours. All the details are minutely researched, perfectly executed and are historically and nautically correct.

The painting takes us back in time and shows us the river as it appeared in those days, highly detailed in their treatment of shipping architecture. Here the river extent about 450 meter width, having a capacious and commodious anchorage with on the opposite the metropolis with its citadel and flag-staff hidden from view by huts and palm trees extending along the borders of the river. Docks, yards and inlets were excavated in the banks of the river. On some places of the river the banks had been washed away from the edges leaving a soft mud. Over this mud-flat were erected causeways or sloping wooden piers constructed from crutched trunks of trees driven in the earth supporting rafters of rough timber. A detailed description of the painting and its contents is available on special request.

The oil-painting is painted on thick Belgian canvas (linen) and throughout prepared. Under the right conditions it could last many centuries. Only high quality oil-paints from Talens(Rembrandt) where used in creating this painting. Two layers of varnish are applied for protection against dust, dirt and atmospheric influences. A strong wooden stretcher (without frame), totally straight, carries this painting. The painting measures 2,73x0,78 meter or 107,5x30,7 inch. A custom made transport crate is available.
